• Most powerful office in the state.
• Term of office is 4 years.
• Must be:
  • A U.S. citizen;
  • A resident of Texas for at least 5 years prior to the election;
  • At least 30 years of age.
• Serves as the President of the Texas Senate.
• Appoints committees and committee chairs.
• Has a great deal of control over what happens in the Senate.
• Can vote when the Senate is in committee of the whole and in order to break ties.
• Takes over for the Governor if necessary.
