  • Term of office is 4 years.
  • Must be:
    • A U.S. citizen;
    • A resident of Texas for at least 5 years prior to the election;
    • At least 30 years of age.
  • Can hold no other office at the same time.
  • Cannot practice his/her profession while governor.
  • Serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Texas Military Forces.
  • Can call the Legislature into special session but must state the reason.
  • Can call the Legislature into session somewhere other than Austin if Austin is "in the possession of the public enemy, or in case of the prevalence of disease threat."
  • Can make appointments but needs 2/3 vote of the Senate to confirm. This includes appointments to regulatory agencies and boards as well as elective positions that are vacated during his term.
  • Has 10 days to veto a bill during the session but must return the bill to the Legislature stating the reason for veto.
  • Can refuse to sign a bill and the bill will become law.
  • If a bill is sent to the Governor within 10 days of the end of the session and it is not signed before the end of the session, the Governor has 20 days to send the reason to the Secretary of State, who is responsible for publicizing it; otherwise it becomes law.
  • Governor gives a message to the Legislature, the State of the State message at the beginning of the legislative session.
  • Governor must estimate how much money the state will need at the beginning of the session, and at the end, he must account for all the money spent.
